She remembers sitting at the foot of a French speaking nun, swaddled in the skirt of her long habit. Her medium, a small box of Crayola crayons. Occasionally on a weekend, her single, working mother would ride the train from the city to Tarrytown and “take her for a walk”. She remembers modeling once for a portrait at Mineola High School but had no other formal art training in school.

Joan often accompanied her husband on long road trips for business. She painstakingly painted views from hotel windows, roadside rest stops and “Grand Openings”. She would lay out a jar of water and her paintbox anywhere she found herself “waiting” while David worked or “ pulled over to take a nap”.

Joan joined a Garden Club after moving to Putnam County, New York (later becoming a Master Judge). Though too young to join the Peekskill Senior Center, she was determined to partake in their painting program. She pestered the organization until an exception was made to include her. There, Joan continued her watercolor studies under the guidance of the accomplished artist Jean Olds. Another senior member, Miriam, “had a beautiful garden and made bouquets of flowers for us to paint”. Flowers soon became her predominant subject.
